Pag

Special features of the Pag Island, and there are many, will leave visitors speechless. In terms of geography, it represents a connection between the south Adriatic coast, Kvarner and part of Istria on the north. Due to very specific, rare vegetation, and being almost always hit by strong bora wind, the island has the most indented coastline in the entire Adriatic. Some parts, especially those facing the mighty Velebit Mountain, with their bare rocks resemble the surface of the Moon. With its rich history that dates back to the Roman Empire and many contrasts, the island is the home to Pag sheep, a unique breed which milk is used to produce Pag cheese, which as the story goes was on the tables of Austria-Hungary lords. The island is connected with the land by ferry port Prizna - Žigljen and by the bridge from the direction of Zadar to city of Pag

This is the only island that is split between two counties. North part, which includes Novalja, is a part of Lika-Senj county, while the south part of the island, with the city of Pag, is a part of Zadar county. People of this region have been practicing fishing, cattle breeding and agriculture since the old days, while expansion of tourism as the most important industry started in the late 1970s.

Pag salt, popularly known as the island’s white gold, has been extracted from brine for hundreds of years and produced by traditional method of drying out sea water in closed reservoirs. This old-fashioned, natural method of producing sea salt has been abandoned when a factory was opened.
